Abandonment, the what, why, how and when
An unused or nonfunctioning well on residential, business or farm property can be forgotten and unmaintained and neglected. When this occurs the well must be abandoned. But, what is abandonment of a well and what is required?
Under state mandate, a well no longer in use must be abandoned, meaning it must be plugged from the bottom up by a licensed professional working under permit.
The state has mandated the facilitation of well abandonment to protect our precious water. When a non-working well is properly abandoned it prevents contamination of the water table and our families.
Every well can be unique and have its own individual circumstances. That being said, the location depth and size of the well will dictate the materials and procedures required to legally plug and abandon the well.
